Winter Solstice Gathering and Potluck

It is that time of year again where the nights are getting longer and colder. That’s right, it’s time for the winter solstice. We will be celebrating with food, fun and friends. As always, we also like to share how the Winter Solstice is celebrated in other cultures. here are a few examples.

In the ancient traditions of the Kalash people of Pakistan, during winter solstice, a demigod returns to collect prayers and deliver them to Dezao, the supreme being. “During this celebrations women and girls are purified by taking ritual baths. The men pour water over their heads while they hold up bread. Then the men and boys are purified with water and must not sit on chairs until evening when goat’s blood is sprinkled on their faces. Following this purification, a great festival begins, with singing, dancing, bonfires, and feasting on goat tripe and other delicacies”

Karachun, Korochun or Kra?ún was a Slavic holiday similar to Halloween as a day when the Black God and other evil spirits were most potent. It was celebrated by Slavs on the longest night of the year. On this night, Hors, symbolising the old sun, becomes smaller as the days become shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, and dies on December 22, the December solstice. He is said to be defeated by the dark and evil powers of the Black God. In honour of Hors, the Slavs danced a ritual chain-dance which was called the horo. Traditional chain-dancing in Bulgaria is still called horo. In Russia and Ukraine, it is known as khorovod. On December 23 Hors is resurrected and becomes the new sun, Koleda. On this day, Western Slavs burned fires at cemeteries to keep their departed loved ones warm, organized dinings in the honor of the dead so as they would not suffer from hunger and lit wooden logs at local crossroads.

Mummer’s Day referencing the animist garbs, or Darkie Day referencing the soot facing ritual, is an ancient Cornish midwinter celebration that occurs every year on December 26 and New Year’s Day in Padstow, Cornwall. It was originally part of the pagan heritage of midwinter celebrations that were regularly celebrated all over Cornwall where people would guise dance and disguise themselves by blackening up their faces or wearing masks.

Soyal is the winter solstice ceremony of the Zuni and the Hopi (Hopitu Shinumu), The Peaceful Ones, also known as the Hopi Indians. It is held on December 21, the shortest day of the year. The main purpose of the ritual is to ceremonially bring the sun back from its long winter slumber. It also marks the beginning of another cycle of the Wheel of the Year, and is a time for purification. Pahos, prayer sticks, are made prior to the Soyal ceremony, to bless all the community, including their homes, animals, and plants. The sacred underground ritual chambers, called kivas, are ritually opened to mark the beginning of the Kachina season.

The Full moon is the lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. More precisely, a full moon occurs when the geocentric apparent ( ecliptic) longitudes of the Sun and Moon differ by 180 degrees; the Moon is then in opposition with the Sun.

The Full Moon is the time for releasing any New Moon intentions out to spirit. If you set intentions, the full Moon is a time when you begin to make out the path, and can take an exhilarating step forward. It is both a culmination and a time to act on something you’ve imagined. In the act of doing, you have brought an idea into reality.

Des Moines New Age Shop Halloween Party and Party

It is that time of year again, It is Halloween!!!

In Ireland, which is considered to be where Halloween, the day is still celebrated much like it is in the United States. In rural areas, bonfires are lit as they were centuries ago, and all over the country, children get dressed up in costumes and spend the evening “trick-or-treating” in their neighborhoods.

In China, the Halloween festival is known as Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of photographs of family members who have departed while bonfires and lanterns are lit in order to light the paths of the spirits as they travel the earth on Halloween night.

The Japanese celebrate the “Obon Festival” (also known as “Matsuri” or “Urabon” and pronounced, “oh bone.) which is similar to Halloween festivities in that it is dedicated to the spirits of ancestors. Special foods are prepared and bright red lanterns are hung everywhere.

Among New World Spanish-speaking nations, particularly Mexico and Aztec-influenced Latin America, Halloween is known as “El Dia de los Muertos.” the days of the dead, a three-day celebration that begins on the evening of October 31 and culminates on November 2. On November 2, relatives gather at the gravesite to picnic and reminisce. Relatives also tidy the gravesites of deceased family members, including snipping weeds, making repairs and painting. The grave is then adorned with flowers, wreaths or paper streamers. They bring picnics and sit around the grave sites sharing stories of the departed and feasting on foods such as spicy meat dishes, batter bread and lots of sweets; some shaped like skulls.

The Halloween celebration in Hong Kong is known as “Yue Lan” (Festival of the Hungry Ghosts) and is a time when it is believed that spirits roam the world for twenty-four hours. Some people burn pictures of fruit or money at this time, believing these images would reach the spirit world and bring comfort to the ghosts.

Regardless of how you celebrate, bring a dish and an imagination as share ghost stories and we celebrate with the four F’s; Friends, Food, Fun and of course Fire.

Autumn Equinox Gathering & Potluck

Saturday September 28th; starts at 7:00 pm and ends when the last person goes home.

In the Northern Hemisphere the Autumnal Equinox, occurs around September 23rd or 24th. It is also known as Michaelmas, Mabon, and Harvest Home.

In China the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is celebrated around the time of the September equinox. It celebrates the abundance of the summer’s harvest and one of the main foods is the mooncake filled with lotus, sesame seeds, a duck egg or dried fruit.

The Polish Feast of Greenery involves bringing bouquets and foods for blessing by a priest, then using them for medicine or keeping them until the following years harvest. The Roman celebration of the Fall Equinox was dedicated to Pomona, goddess of fruits and growing things.

Traditionally, the Japanese marked the spring and fall Equinox with higan, a seven day period in which they remember their ancestors by visiting the family grave, cleaning the tombstone, offering flowers and food, burning incense sticks, and praying.

In Greek mythology fall is associated with when the goddess Persephone returns to the underworld to be with her husband Hades. It was supposedly a good time to enact rituals for protection and security as well as reflect on successes or failures from the previous months.

Then there is the tradition of gatherings at the changing of the seasons here at the Des Moines New Age Shop.

Bring a dish and join us as we break out the fire pit and share in the merriment of the welcoming another Autumn.

Summer Solstice Celebration & Potluck

Through out the centuries there have been many different ways to celebrate the summer solstice. The Native American Sioux tribe, for instance, performed a ceremonial sun dance around a tree while wearing symbolic colors.

The summer solstice was particularly important to the ancient Egyptians because it coincided with the start of the Nile’s flooding season. It was believed that at this time the goddess Isis shed tears of mourning for her dead husband Osiris, causing the river to rise and nourish the Nile Valley. Festivals were held to honor both deities and celebrate fertility and abundance.

The ancient Chinese participated in a ceremony on the summer solstice to honor the earth, femininity and the force known as yin.

Many Germanic, Slavic and Celtic pagans welcomed summer with bonfires, a tradition that is still enjoyed in Germany, Austria, Estonia and other countries. Some ancient tribes practiced a ritual in which couples would jump through the flames to predict how high that year’s crops would grow.

Midsummer was a crucial time of year for the Vikings of Scandinavia, who would meet to discuss legal matters and resolve disputes around the summer solstice.

These are just some of the ways others have celebrated the longest day of the year. Join us as we celebrate the Summer Solstice with friends, food, fun and probably a fire (jumping through the flames is optional.)

BELLYDANCE 101: Sunday April 7th 2013 , 11am-Noon at DES MOINES NEW AGE SHOP

Hello Folks, Well, as you know, Des Moines New Age Shop began a new trial class at the beginning of the year, BellyDance 101, taught by The Gifted Malaika & set to be 4 classes in length. It was so popular that we brought it back for another month of sunday classes from 11 am – 12pm (it’s a good idea to be alittle early). It is still only $10 per class.

There are many Belly Dance instructors, but only one Malaika. As an added benefit, she is also a Massage Therapist, so if you have any injuries(back problems, ankle issues, etc) she will teach you appropriate ways to work around them. The Gifted Malaika has agreed to share her knowledge & experience for our class (Her skill is extraordinary & her passion for the dance is infectious). If you have ever been curious about this fun & exotic artform, now is the time to come & try your hand at it. Plus it’s a great way to get in shape while having fun & meeting other likeminded souls.

Poi is the graceful performance art form involving swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. Poi can be made from various materials with different handles, weights, and effects (such as fire, Which will be covered in Poi 201). Poi originated with the Maori people of New Zealand, where it is still practiced today. Poi has also gained a following in many other countries. The expansion of poi culture has led to a significant evolution of the styles practiced, the tools used, and the definition of the word “Poi.” Poi, in the Maori language refers to the style of performance art , the equipment used for engaging in poi performance & the accompanying music.

Basically, Jon teaches us how to do what we saw in The Princess Bride & Star Wars. How to swing a sword around while developing your coordination & having fun. BLUE MOON GATHERING: Fri. 8/31 at DES MOINES NEW AGE SHOP from 6pm-9pm

We normally gather at the Full Moon & New Moon, But this celestial event just begs to be celebrated. (“ Blue Moon”, is the term for a 2^nd full month in one calendar month. This happens every 2-3 years or, “once in a blue moon”. When there is an extra full moon in the year ( 13 instead of 12), this 13^th Full Moon is called a Blue moon. The Blue Moon is Good for setting long range goals, It is a Sign of healing , new beginnings in emotional aspects, an end to conflicts , change & a chance to get a jump forward into whatever you are wanting to do.) So lets all gather to celebrate the Blue Moon. 😀 There will be tea brewing, Bring a munchie if you would like. & if you want bring food to share:D

The Earth is in a stage of transformation and re-birth. A spiritual awakening is occurring. This transformation will require a substantial evolution in our ways of thinking and in our perceptions of reality. This awakening process manifests itself in several ways in our personal lives, in addition to the “big picture” turmoil we are seeing on the national and global social-economic and political stage, Which is WHY this Class was created. To help more spiritually conscious folks( Like you) to cope with the changes that are coming. We have been feeling the effects for a few months now. “You cannot solve a problem with the same kind of thinking that created it.”~~~Albert Einstein Which is where David comes in , David will be introducing you to a list of Ascension Sickness symptoms, as well as teaching you techniques for coping with them. This class is intended to help familiarize you with many of the common ones and affirm for you that these things are a quite normal and, even an expected part of the process. This class is also intended to provide some advice and perspective on the process to help mitigate the effects, concerns, and turmoil produced by the process.
